25 Apr - Home v Deans Tigers

Match reports are raining down on us like confetti as the lads win their third match of the season in a manner that left them, Andy, Pete and our spectators absolutely speechless!!

Both teams came into this fixture with two victories apiece and sharing bottom spot in the table with Deans Panthers – all on six points. As with all our matches we had a steady start to the game but things weren’t looking bright when Deans took the lead and the lads looked a bit dejected. Max however went on one of his dazzling left wing runs and centered a great cross that Chris kept his eye on as he and their keeper rose for the ball. As the ball evaded the keeper’s fist, Chris was right behind him and thumped in a brave and fearless header. Whilst this boosted the lads’ confidence no end, Deans scored another to go into the interval with a 2-1 lead.

At this stage nobody could have envisaged the remarkable second half that was to follow. Deans took complete control of the match and extended their lead to 4-1 and our spectators were beginning to fear the worst but the lads had a plan! As they walked back to the centre spot for the fourth time, one of our players suggested that they might surprise the visitors by scoring four quick goals in succession. Guess what? They did - and a remarkable ten minute spell saw Chis, Cal Mc, Sean and Max turn the match on its head by going from 4-1 down to 5-4 up!

The lads, spectators, but not Andy and Pete, were going delirious with delight but it wasn’t to last as Deans pulled one back to make it 5-5 with ten minutes to go. Minutes from the end one of the Deans defenders bundled into our attacker inside the box and the ref pointed to the spot! A ‘Balotelli’ incident was avoided as nobody grabbed the ball off one of their surprised team-mates and Andy avoided an embarrassing incident by barking his order to the team that it was Nathan’s ball! As Nathan placed the ball the crowd fell silent and some even closed their eyes! The team and crowd erupted as Nath slotted it home with ease and waited for his team-mates to engulf him!

The lads saw the game out during the last few minutes and trooped off to well-earned applause and we all wondered if we’d ever witness such a dramatic turn round in fortunes with this or any other team.

A remarkable score line and once again ‘Well done lads’ – it was great to watch but try and do it the easy way in future as the nerves of your faithful fans are absolutely shredded!

- - - we have a second victory to report!!

18 Apr - Home v Astley Bridge Colts

In keeping with your intrepid reporter’s agreement to always report on the lads victories then here goes with another one – and this is even more pleasing as this victory was against 4th placed Astley Bridge Colts who had beaten us at their place 5-2 back in December.

With only 11 lads at his disposal due to the end of the Easter holidays, Manger Andy had to come up with a formation that suited the 11 available players and it’s fair to say that the results were quite surprising! As I approached the pitch shortly after the kick-off, I just caught sight of Bury taking an early lead as Max forced their keeper into fumbling the ball into his own net. It might have been ‘scruffy’ but for Max it was his first goal for the team since his recent transfer.

This great start was to signal the most confident half of football that we have seen from the lads this season and Callum S confirmed our superiority with a back post header from a corner that looped slowly back across the goal and over their desperate keeper. Burys approach play was superb and they mercilessly harassed the Astley defence into a panic with every attack and we were all rubbing our eyes with amazement when Nathan rammed home another great goal to make it 3-0 to the lads.

Late on in the half, Astley pulled a goal back as we went through a sloppy phase of indifferent tackling and the lads were punished for it but at least the half finished at 3-1 in favour of Bury.

Burys confidence continued to be sky high throughout the second half and it was a surprise to us all that we didn’t add to the score but it was no surprise that the lads allowed Astley to sneak another goal which had our fans nervously baying for the final whistle – and it came with a great deal of relief!

A victory of 3-2 sounds to be a close result but far from it as Bury were the better team on the day and Astley’s spectators were generous in their praise of our lads and their vastly improved form. This confidence boosting victory now needs to be taken forward to our final two matches of the season starting with next weeks home match against Deans Tigers and the return match later on at the season – end.

Well done lads – it was great to watch!

Profound apologies to all those of you who like a match report but it’s been very difficult to report on our great set of lads when they start the campaign with 11 matches and 11 defeats! 'Report repetitiveness' was bound to creep in so I’ve waited until now in order to report on something positive!

Despite the results not going their way during the first half of the season, the lads have never given in and our spectators have noticed a great deal of determination since the turn of the year! It is a great credit to their personal levels of enthusiasm and commitment that they have turned up week after week in the hope that their fortunes would change – and this week they have as, at last, - - - - -

- - - we have a victory to report!!

14 Mar - Away v Deans Panthers

On the back of conceding twenty one goals and scoring none in the last two games against two of the top teams in our division, the lads arrived in a positive mood for the much awaited clash against the only other team with a 100% negative record that matched ours! Something had to give – and it surely did!

No-one could have anticipated such a feisty affair but with pride at stake for both teams there was no quarter given by either side as endless thrills, tension, penalties and near sending-offs littered what would turn out to be a very hard earned victory for our marauding lads! Early in the first half, hat-trick hero Nathan settled the nerves of both his team-mates and Bury’s large army of followers some of which had travelled down from up near John O’Groats (that’s dedication for you!). Unfortunately Bury were unable to hang on to the lead but the lads responded when Chris bundled the ball in during a scrappy goal area melee and that took Bury into half time with a 2-1 lead.

We all eagerly awaited the second half despite both lads and fans not being overly impressed with a somewhat fussy referee whose slight stature and controversial decisions gave the impression that he knew less about football than our youngest supporter and consequently he lost the respect of players and fans alike. His inconsistent decisions caused lads from both sides to challenge his authority and the un-necessary 'lippiness' from both sets of lads resulted in one of our lads being carded and one of theirs nearly being sent off!

So despite the ref, the football continued in the second half and Bury shot into 4-1 lead as Nathan completed his hat-trick with two thumping shots which made the fans forgive him for some of the easier attempts that he failed to convert. Surely, a Bury victory was a formality but panic set in with the lads as the Panthers pulled one back and then another to leave Bury, and their nervous fans, clinging on desperately to a 4-3 lead!

The whistle couldn’t come soon enough and when it did the feistiness cleared although the home team were somewhat reluctant to finish it off with a handshake. Their manager was clearly disappointed with the result whereas our management team of Andy and Assistant Pete were more than pleased with the spirit of our lads as they have hopefully raised the bar as we look forward to both the return encounter and future games against teams of a similar level.

The long journey back home was obviously the sweetest one we’ve had as our keeper and two defenders in the back of the car reminded us of their on-field encounters!

Well done to you all lads – the efforts of the whole team was superb!
